Entre Vigne et Garrigue
The ideal place to stay to visit the Gard department
Near Avignon and bordering the Camargue, the Cevennes and Provence, Entre Vigne et Garrigue is ideally located if you want to explore one of the most beautiful regions in France, home to seemingly endless wonders.
History and architecture buffs are sure to be delighted by the Pont du Gard, the stunning and spectacular remains of the Roman aqueduct which carried water from Uzès to Nîmes.
The site also houses the largest interpretation centre in France, featuring a museum, exhibitions, films, children’s areas and much more: it promises a truly unforgettable visit. Fans of the ancient world should also visit Nîmes, home to several amphitheatres, the Tour Magne (which forms part of the Roman city wall) and the beautiful Maison Carrée, a Gallo-Roman temple which was entirely restored in 2022.
Another unmissable destination: Uzès, with its wonderful Place aux Herbes where a scene from Cyrano de Bergerac by Jean-Paul Rappeneau was filmed. A delightful opportunity to enjoy a stroll under the town square’s arcades and through the Old Town’s shady streets or to visit the city’s cathedral with its Tour Fenestrelle and the Château Ducal.
The Gard department is home to truly extraordinary villages: Aiguèze with its 11th-century fortress, Montclus and its square tower, La Roque-sur-Cèze and Lussan, perched on a rocky cliff. Criss-crossed by the Camino de Santiago, the department also boasts a number of religious monuments which were visited on medieval pilgrimages: listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1998, the Saint-Gilles du Gard church and abbey is a magnificent example of the Romanesque style of the Provence region.
Keen walkers will have infinite choices between the Provence and the Cévennes!
Follow in Stevenson’s footsteps, climb Mont Aigoual and be rewarded for your efforts with breathtaking panoramic views, recharge your batteries amidst a backdrop of the ravines of the Cèze river, marvel at the extraordinary Cirque de Navacelle and enjoy the quiet beauty of Le Vigan and Vézénobres.
